The Best Thing For You
Vocalist/pianist John Proulx (pronounced "Proo") showcases his unique musical gifts in “The Best Thing For You." Proulx, a Grammy Award-winning composer, presents a fresh take on a number of standards as well as six compelling, original compositions. The selections and arrangements offer a wide variety of musical styles: from jazz, folk and hip-hop to Brazilian, contemporary jazz and pop. The overlay of different musical styles combined with the jazz-influenced arrangements make for a great blend. Joining Proulx on the recording are long-time collaborators bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Joe LaBarbera. Co-producing the recording with Proulx is Grammy Award-winning arranger Bill Cunliffe who also appears as a guest pianist on one track. Additional guests include vocalist Sara Gazarek, saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter Ron Stout, guitarist Larry Koonse and cellist Jeremy Boersma. The recording also features a wonderful duet with vocalist Michael Feinstein on the Johnny Mercer/Bobby Darin composition “Two of a Kind.” This is Proulx’s third MAXJAZZ release. Proulx comments on the recording: I’m pleased to present “The Best Thing For You,” a celebration of song, collaboration, friendship and storytelling. The selections and arrangements come from my own experiences which continue to inspire me and push me to perform and write music in new and exciting ways, and from a wide variety of musical styles which I enjoy. Working with lyricists K. Lawrence Dunham and D. Channsin Berry always opens new doors of creativity and great storytelling through song. The musicians on this recording are not only world-class but also dear friends. Playing with them is both inspiring and joyful. With the outstanding contributions of the musicians along with the support of the collaborators and Associate Executive Producers, Susan and Dan Thom, there's truly something special here. So sit back, relax, and I hope you agree that the best thing for you would be me!
